How do I build a website?

After I decide on a domain name and find a host, what happens next? do they give me some sort of password that i use?

I%26#039;m wondering because this is for my business, and i want to hire someone to design it, but after that, I want to have control over it.

Most domain hosts allow you to FTP into their server. They should provide you with an address to FTP to and a username and password. IE7 will allow you to FTP so you don%26#039;t need any special program. When you FTP into the server you will see the files that are the website. It will work similarly to any other folder you open on your computer. Drag and drop files to and from the folder as you please.

How do I build a website?

The person designs it and uploads it to your server. It is then all yours. You can log into your server control everything.

You might have trouble changing this on it after the build and design it for you. That is unless you know HTML or have a program like dreamweaver or frontpage.

there are two main ways to do this, on your computer go to my network places and create new network place and it will ask what type of network chosse the folder that looks like a file folder hooked up with wires(web folder) and type in your domain name like for example Http://www.yahoo.com NOT

ftp://www.yahoo.com

Ftp can be easier because u drag and drop files but on most progams if u use ftp it limits future features(ftp is best for dragging and droping html files written with notepad)

you will want to have some sort of web editing program like front page(i highly recommend for begginers)

or dreamweaver(cool but VERY expenseive, last time i checked i think it was around $700)

For anyone to say building a website is easy. I would have to wonder how many websites they have built and what the quality level of those sites was. I would also wonder what technologies they they implemented to build it.

I am also guessing that they believe computer programming and application development is easy as well. I say this due to the fact that many websites are designed using programming languages and custom written applications. Most of the larger web sites in the corporate world contain dynamically generated HTML or XHTML with data from other resources such as databases.

There are way too many people out there that believe they can build a web site without knowing how to hand code. They believe if they have a copy of FrontPage or Dreamweaver that makes them a webmaster.

There is far more to web design and development then those people can even imagine. At a minimum to design a decent website you should know HTML, CSS, JavaScript and probably a DBMS as well such as MySQL. Knowing other languages such as PHP, C#, VB, Perl, Ruby will only improve your programming and web design toolbox as well.

One of the things that bothers me the most is that every graphics designer I have ever met advertises that they build websites. I know very few that can claim they are proficient in any programming language.
