Of course, a %26quot;good domain%26quot; is usually based on what the site%26#039;s content is... It would be pointless to call a site about hardware or software %26quot;fluffybunnies%26quot; for instance...

Most people have the idea, and work with the domain and hosting /after/ they know what they want to do...

If you need an HTML/CSS editor, I would suggest Notepad++. I personally find it much more useful than MS Frontpage or even Dreamweaver.

Of course, if you don%26#039;t have a clue about HTML, well... I would suggest you start with a good book about it, then.

I have a web site that I want to put up for a small business. I have the domain name and the hosting from godaddy.com. But I found their web design software to be not very user friendly and I can%26#039;t find software that is user friendly. I have all the text written and photos ready. I have about 10 pages. I designed my web page for my music production company in photoshop. I%26#039;m not the greatest designer but i%26#039;m on a really tight budget so i had to do the best i could.

I%26#039;m stuck now..because i purchased a domain and i have hosting...all i need now is for someone to code the site for me. I%26#039;m also thinking about incorporating a flash intro (nothing too complicated) and to somehow add a flash music player in the music section of the site.

Does anyone have any suggestions? is there a site that has a listing of programmers for this?

If it%26#039;s not too much of a waste of your valuable time you could learn to code it yourself. It%26#039;s not too difficult although like everything there is a learning curve. It is also lots of fun and you will be able to edit the site yourself without additional cost.

If you do wish to code it yourself for goodness sake do not use one of the packaged web design program. They will not help you at all as you will need to learn the programs and their quirks. You need to learn HTML which is the language used to write webs. (A small amount of Javascript may be necessary but nothing you can%26#039;t copy from others.)

An excellent set of tutorials on line is to be found at www.htmldog.com and a good beginner book (although horribly verbose) is the Head Start book on HTML.

Ignore the advice of tolstoi1. It always pays to start with good practices which you will never get by trying to learn by looking at other sites. You need to learn good programming practices and methods by doing, not by copying.

if your on a tight budget, ive bad news. This type of work tends to run around 500$ (for a greater then one page website, assuming thats what you want).

As for coders, just google webpage development costs. You will get a bunch of quotes and companies, along with personal ones as well.

Hosting is your bigger problem. You could probably find those kind of hosting by going to that kind of site you want and see which hosting provider they%26#039;re using. Then find a way to contact that provider.

I wrote a question on selling how-to videos mdigital gave me this answer :If you want to control the media (ie. sell How to videos) you just need to purchase a domain name, purchase web hosting space and write a simple script (php, perl, etc) that allows users to signup and access your site.

This is exactly what I want to do. I want to make my own videos and give people the opportunity to log in to my site and download a video I have made to their computer.

you can get a free website with yahoo/geocities. there are plenty others - i%26#039;m sure there will be more replies, or you could google for that.

different site-hosts will have different capabilities for uploading. in all cases, you%26#039;ll need a userID and a password. the connection-parameters are usually available online. i%26#039;ve developed and uploaded numerous websites to free-hosts and my own domain, and never had to talk to a person on the phone. even my domain registration was all done online, and they%26#039;re in australia.

note that with a free site-host (like geocities) you are usually accepting their advertising on your pages.

i have looked at some sites already that offer domain and web site hosting, site builders, and so on. i%26#039;m not dumb i get all that but what i don%26#039;t honestly understand is what i will get for my money if i sign up for them. i dont just want to create some website like what i did 6th grade for a science project, i want a fully functioning website , where people can sign in and out with usernames and passwords, chat, have profiles, etc. my gut tells me i won%26#039;t get that on 5.99/month. if it sounds too good to be true it usually is i guess. please suggest web site builders i can use to create a website like that. money is not a factor at this point, i just want suggestions. thanks so much

This is super important. if you decide later on to switch web hosts, they can make life difficult by not allowing you to change your domain name registrar.

I bought a website off of e-bay. Thinking it was in HTML format, instead I have a folder that contains about 900 PHP files. I currently have Yahoo sitebuilder and the site creator from 1%26amp;1. So I have plenty of domain names and web hosting available. I just don%26#039;t know alot about how to build a website from scratch. Any suggestions on how to convert or what I need to do, to be able to use the PHP files.

You%26#039;ll need to have a web developer setup/configure the database in your web hosting environment, as well as the config.php files, and any other files that need to be configured to have the site function properly.

Without knowing exactly what kind of website it is and what functionality it has, it%26#039;s difficult to determine everything that needs to be done.

You can do this using static HTML code but I would suggest you need to learn PHP, MySQL or some other dynamic HTML coding language to make your site use %26quot;published content%26quot; which will make future changes to the site easier and makes publishing new videos a more simple task.

Learning to code websites at that level is no easy task so you would be better to pay an experienced developer of this type of site to setup and code your site for you

You also need to consider whether you want to let the users download the videos or merely stream them off the server

Why go through all that trouble when you can have a simple ecommerce site where people can select and order your videos on DVD and have it shipped to them without you doing a thing.

Everyday more and more people are switching to non-IE browsers and doing such a thing (using that custom font) would be a big waste of time. As far as a hosted custom font, it is possible for visitors to tweak the layout of your site to the font that they want. I%26#039;ve been to sites were this is possible. It%26#039;s some kind of script.

Or you could try to download the installer for the latast version of PHP 5 and install it for MS IIS (I don%26#039;t know realy how to do it since I hate everything what has to do with Microsoft and Bill Gates).

It has been a LONG time since I%26#039;ve done this.

I want to be able to telnet somewhere that%26#039;ll give me a Unix shell, with Pine and trn and all the basics like that, and which%26#039;ll host a web site (domain name mine). The ability to use some extras, like run a majordomo, would be nice but are not critical.

OK, I%26#039;m a little confused because you asked about a machine ... but it sounds like you want a web host.

I suggest A Small Orange. You can do all those things, including secure shell, and great resources, and it%26#039;s very, very reasonable (try $25 a year for a tiny account, just $50/year for a small one, which is what I have).

The catch is that compared to other hosts, the storage and bandwidth seem small. But that%26#039;s a good thing! They don%26#039;t oversell their shared servers. Watch out for hosts that overpromise and underdeliver.

Then I open up dreamweaver and edit the tables accordingly to allow for text and to make the page stretch vertically and/or horizontally. Just keep all the files your edit in one root folder then once it all looks good all you have to do it upload all the contents of the root folder to your website%26#039;s root folder in ftp and you%26#039;re good to go ;)

Can i host two different websites having different domain names to run from a single host? for example I make two different folders in www root A and b.

Now www.A.com point to my folder A and www.b.com.

using IIS you simply specify a Host Header Name in the properties dialog of the website. on the Web Site tab click Advanced, and add host header names for each site. i recommend adding at least two entries for each. the domain name alone and the www.domain name. be sure to use TCP port 80 for all standard web sites.

using Apache, or some other Unix based web server... um, yeah, not sure, but i would suspect that it also handles host names.

I think we need to actually see your domain to troubleshoot this. As long as you put the favicon in your root directory (top level), that%26#039;s all you can do. Technically you don%26#039;t really even have to put the link rel=shorcut icon tag in your documents anymore.

1and1 have had massive e-mail delivery problems over the last 4 days - yes - 4 days - and it is still not resolved. When i phoned them they claimed all was OK 2 days ago - they lied. They said it would be resolved that night - it wasn%26#039;t - they lied. We must all act when/if they get their act together - I for one will transfer my domains to another host and i am demanding compensation for my business. What else can be done??

legal issues--depends on who owns the domain name. If your friend paid for it then he owns the domain name (for the term he signed up for) and can host it wherever he wishes. If he let the webdesigner buy it and it is in web designers name he may have slight problems that only a civil court could decide. He should have full (not limited) access to his own site. Sounds like he needs a reputable web designer.

The $64k question is to whom the domain name is registered to and paid DIRECTLY by. If the domain name%26#039;s indeed registered under the webmaster%26#039;s name and is paid for by the webmaster%26#039;s credit card or something similar, then demonstrating ownership towards the domain name WILL be a nightmare.

If by having limited permission to access the web host you mean your friend can only access the website hosting, then s/he at least can do something to the website. Gaining ownerhip and control over the domain name is something only your friend can possibly take it up with the domain provider in question, and that%26#039;s if the domain name is registered to your friend instead of the webmaster.

Unfortunately this is a typical scenario many people face every other day, especially if they keep relying on others to handle it for them without taking some time to understand a few basic yet crucial ideas about how these things work. Worst case scenario is taking it to Court, and you STILL won%26#039;t get the domain name if the judge doesn%26#039;t rule in your favor.

Other Replys:I dont fully understand your question. If you are wondering what svchost is, its a Windows Service that handles Automatic updates, Sound card, Wireless Internet, and other esstenial Windows Services. Do not stop or end this process.

In other cases, svchost can be mimicked and be a virus (probably not in this case). Make sure you have a virus scan, as some people try to make their file svchost.exe so that it looks like a windows service.

I do not know if I%26#039;m the only one to have experienced this but yahoo seems not to be getting the proper IP adress when looking up the MX entry of a domain.

I have changed the hosting of my website 6 months ago and when I send email from my mail.yahoo.ca the email email goes through my old hosting provider.

Also, if you want to know why you have to pay for a domain if nobody even knows about it, its because the registry needs to register the domain for it to work. It costs them money to get a registry licence, thats why you pay. If your domain isn%26#039;t registered, then anybody could say %26quot;MINE%26quot; and take it from you.

GPO + Software install: Doesn't work. Need help for my network technologies class?

No one in class can get the software install to automatically load on the client pc. I%26#039;ll try to sum it up the best I can. Have a class that we are working with Windows Server 2003. Have a Domain setup on our host pc. Have a second pc that is a client and can logon the domain. It can access the public folder that we setup. (We also put the test program Windows Defender MSI in there). We installed GPMC and are using Group Policy Manager (we also tried a similiar method in AD Users and Comps). So, we name our policy Push1 and we mapped it as \\server\folder\file.msi as per Microsoft%26#039;s instructions (not browse). We double checked the members of/rights area and the clientxp (our test login name) has that. Both under the computer management and user management we tried setting up these GPO Software installs. Weird thing is that if we restart the server, it auto installs on there. I double checked and it shows it as comp/user management for our domain not the local pc Any ideas?Can add info

Your best bet to locate the trouble causing your GPO not to be applied properly is the RSoP tool, or Resultant State of Policy, which will clearly show which policies are active, and where they are applied. You access this tool via the Help and Support pages, (easiest access for me! lol) Just open Help and Support and type RSoP into the search box and click Search,and then open the tool from the right side of the Help and Support window. Once you locate the tool, check the How to Open area so you can easily type in the tools name in the Run box, or any other cmd prompt window where you can open and run programs for future access.

Unless and until you check out your RSoP there isn%26#039;t anything more I can say here. This is the best method of discovering what policy is in place, if it is in conflict with another policy, or if a permission is getting in the way via inheritence, etc. This tool is the main method for troubleshooting Group Policy.

Sounds like your domain has gotten flagged for spam. Either that or the subject lines you are using are flagged for spam. Technically that is illegal according to FreeWebs.com%26#039;s Terms of Service. They own the templates with all images.

But, to answer your question, you have to copy/paste all the pages you have onto new HTML files at new site. You then have to download all images and upload them to new site into a folder of the same name as used on old site.

U register a new domain name e.g. network solutions. They will hold your Name Server. Name Server is the server runing DNS + Webserver and other services.

For you to host website on your computer u can simply go to the DNS tools on the website where you registered your domain name. Put the IP address of your computer (note: you need to have at least one public IP address on the computer Connected to the internet). Onceyou have done that go to dnsstuff.com and write your domain name and do a lookup for NS (Name Server). results should show ur computer IP address. If you see that result that means you ready to host the website on ur computer. Now u need to have a dns running on ur computer and a webserver. if you are using Windows u can use IIS or u can download APACHE for windows. If you have linux u can install apache. now u asked where to drop your web files. it can be any folder on your computer but u need to tell apache or iis to look in that folder (ASSIGN ROOT FOLDER FOR THAT WEBSITE). if you understand DNS and webserver it will be a very easy job for you to do all this. I have a web hotel account that has been in use for a while, recently I asked my provider to add 30 new domains to this webhotel as virtual hosts, which they say they have done. However when I look in the web hotel using SmartFTP I see no folders listed for each new domain which on previous occassions times when they have set up virtual host I have done. They say I need to create an index file in my www file to tell each page where to look. This however is beyond my knowledge - could somebody be so kind as to tell me how to make this index, or whether I should go back to them!

I%26#039;m starting my own website. To keep it short, I%26#039;m very tech savy. I%26#039;m great at designing and working with graphics, and I%26#039;ve come to get really comfortable with using Photoshop. I have all the software I need (Graphic software, Dreamweaver for the html, etc). I know more than the basics of html and a little bit of CSS. The thing is, I need a little bit of help.

Do you guys have any advice for me, as to how exactly to begin? I have the hosting already, and have my domain registered, so I have that set. I know what content I%26#039;m going to offer, and have what it takes to make my site different and unique, to attract visitors.

It would really help to know what your site%26#039;s subject is and what features the site will have (i.e. lots of links or mini-banners? any advertisments? forums integrated into the site? sections on the front page for articles or photo galleries? maybe a place for users to log into the site?)

If you look around the internet you%26#039;ll notice that there are a few basic layouts that sites typically use.

-Header image/banner top, vertical navigation bar on left or right side (or both) , content in the middle.

-Header image/banner on top, navigation bar horizontally oriented and placed directly under banner.

-Header/banner on top, two nav bars.. one horizontal and one vertical.

-%26#039;Google-style%26#039;, very simplistic.. only a banner image and maybe links or some content underneath in the middle.

So basically you need to decide how you wanna present the content to people. Decide if you want the page cluttered with helpful features or very simple.

Also, take a look at some other sites that focus on a similar subject and see if you get any inspiration.

NOW, once you decide the layout it%26#039;;s time to get to work coding. Like I said before, I usually start by laying out HTML tables. I put the entire site in one main table, then make one table to hold the banner, and make another for the navigation bar. It%26#039;s hard to describe how to set up the site if I%26#039;m not sure how you want to lay it out, so put some more details in your question about the site itself :)

So I bought my domain with one company. I am hosting it with someone else. I connected to my FTP and got my domain folder to appear. So everything seemed okay. I went to my files and dragged my main page into the FTP server.

You need to get a fixed IP address, this costs extra, you may even have to upgrade to a business broadband account which costs more. You need to set port forwarding on the router for each service you wish to offer. The firewall will need to be opened on each port. For email you need to run a very secure smtp service or you become an open relay for spam and will be blocked. You will also become liable for legal damages in some cases. Your own dns could be useful as your machine needs to offer dns for your own internal network as it needs to point to your private IP address (machines on your network can not see your external IP). This really needs 2 network cards, one lan side, the other web side as you will need to feed any internal machines through it, otherwise you may start giving illegal dns information externally. For reliability a ups is a good idea, it needs to run the pc and the router.

Exchange Server 2003 ForestPrep extends the Active Directory schema to include Exchange-specific classes and attributes. ForestPrep also creates the container object for the Exchange organization in Active Directory. The schema extensions supplied with Exchange Server 2003 are a superset of those supplied with Exchange 2000 Server. Even if you have run Exchange 2000 ForestPrep, you must run Exchange Server 2003 ForestPrep again. In the domain where the schema master resides, run ForestPrep. (By default, the schema master runs on the first Windows domain controller installed in a forest.) Exchange Setup verifies that you are running ForestPrep in the correct domain. If you are not in the correct domain, Setup informs you which domain contains the schema master. For information about how to determine which of your domain controllers is the schema master, see Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 Help.

The account you use to run ForestPrep must be a member of the Enterprise Administrator and the Schema Administrator groups. While you are running ForestPrep, you designate an account or group that has Exchange Full Administrator permissions to the organization object. This account or group also has the authority to delegate additional Exchange Full Administrator permissions after the first server is installed.Important:

When you delegates Exchange roles to a security group, it is recommend that you use Global or Universal security groups and not Domain Local security groups. Although Domain Local security groups can work, they are limited in scope to their own domain. In many scenarios, Exchange Setup needs to authenticate to other domains during the installation. Exchange Setup may fail in this case because of a lack of permissions to your external domains.

Note:

To decrease replication time, it is recommended that you run Exchange Server 2003 ForestPrep on a domain controller in your root domain.

Running Exchange Server 2003 DomainPrep

After you run ForestPrep and allow time for replication, you must run Exchange Server 2003 DomainPrep. The Exchange Server 2003 version of DomainPrep performs the following actions in the domain:

Creates Exchange Domain Servers and Exchange Enterprise Servers groups.

Nests the global Exchange Domain Servers into the Exchange Enterprise Servers local group.

Creates the Exchange System Objects container, which is used for mail-enabled public folders.

Sets permissions for the Exchange Enterprise Servers group at the root of the domain, so that Recipient Update Service has the appropriate access to process recipient objects.

Modifies the AdminSdHolder template where Windows sets permissions for members of the local Domain Administrator group.

Adds the local Exchange Domain Servers group to the Pre-Windows 2000 Compatible Access group.

Performs Setup pre-installation checks.

The account you use to run DomainPrep must be a member of the Domain Administrators group in the local domain and a local computer administrator. You must run DomainPrep in the following domains:

The root domain.

All domains that will contain Exchange Server 2003 servers.

All domains that will contain Exchange Server 2003 mailbox-enabled objects (such as users and groups), even if no Exchange servers will be installed in these domains.

All domains that will contain global catalog servers that Exchange directory access components may potentially use.

To remedy this problem, after you install your first Exchange Server 2003 server, you can install the subsequent Exchange servers in unattended mode, so that you can automate your server installations. An unattended setup of an Exchange Server 2003 server proceeds and completes without any prompts or dialog boxes. Furthermore, an unattended setup creates an answer file that stores information about a sample configuration. The file can then be used to set up Exchange Server 2003 on multiple servers. Our old web master is no longer with our group. We need to change our tech/admin/contact information to me so I can make any changes to the site if we need to. I was told by the web host he had that I can%26#039;t without his permission. I don%26#039;t know where he is and haven%26#039;t had contact with him for a long time. He was renewing the domain name and simple site for three years and just stopped this year. I happened to stumble on this information by chance and renewed it under his name to keep the domain name. I contacted the web host, paid 400% more than what I pay for mine but had to because that was all they would let me do. I need to know how to remove his name from the tech/admin/contact information and put mine. The web host said to contact ICANN, that that was the only way I was going to be able to change it. I tried to contact ICANN by their online support form and it has been two weeks with no response. Does anyone have suggestions on how to do this?

You have to make the distinction between a web host and a domain name registrar. As it stands, it seems that your have the web host thing all figured out, but you just need to fix up the registration info with the registrar. For ICANN, I suggest you call them and explain the situation as I%26#039;m sure they already have dealt with situations like yours. Another option is that some registrars like ICANN can reset your password for your account. What they do is send you a new password to the email address that was used to register the account. If the technical or administrative contact for your domain is actually something like admin@yourdomain.com then you could re-create that email address with your webhost and forward it to yourself. This way you will get the new password and change all of the info you need. Other than that, I simply suggest calling ICANN rather than submitting a ticket.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, is there a workaround, such as getting different nameservers, or asking the hosting company to use different IP addresses? How do I tell if IP addresses are banned/blocked?

But anyway, my question is how do I build my website. I was under the impression that I can upload the files in the script via FTP and after that I can go into my cpanel and file manager and manage the site from there and i will have a website.

If your host supports PHP then you should be able to simply upload the PHP files to a directory.

Ive seen these plans that go for as low as 2 dollars a year for a domain name now, my question if im building a website from scratch can I just purchase the 2 dollar a year plan that only provides a domain name and be able to set up a website or would this plan only give me the right to owning the name I choose for my website without actually allowing me to set up a website.

So if I buy the plan from yahoo for 2 dollars a year that provides a domain name can i also host a website or do i need a different plan

My boss wants me to set up a new website for his business. He has an old website, but it is old and he doesn%26#039;t have any of the passwords/information for it. Is there a way to retrieve that information, or at least find out what%26#039;s hosting the website? Otherwise, I%26#039;ll have to register a new domain, and I wouldn%26#039;t be able to use the name of the business, which is the old domain.

Go to the URL listed below and type in the domain.com address and check all the boxes. Click the go button and then on your results look under Registrar this is the name and contact information that the domain name is registered through. Then scroll down to the Registration information section and you will see who is registered as the current legal owner of the domain name which should be your bosses name. If it is a name other than your bosses you will have to contact them about buying the domain back. If you do not keep registration of domain name paid up you loose it.If no information shows up means the domain name currently is not registered and you can just re-register it. It would not be the first time people think they own a domain name when it is legally registered to someone else.

i m pretty sure that there must a option in host control panel

for directing domain name towards your webspace.

thou%26#039; if they aint from same server it will take some time like a day or so.

and your domain name must have nameserver ....that your hosting account has to point to get it working.

next thing you need to do is just

upload you webpages file on host space.

Note: first page should be index.htm/html cos server searches for that above all.

Secondly, if you got paid hosting, most chances you can change the domain on your own, if you got free hosting, find the DNS servers for that host, then go to your domain registrar and change the dns servers to the ones that are listed at your host, then contact your host, to change their settings so your website has your domain name(if it doesn%26#039;t, usually if you registered with a free subdomain, if you registered with your newly bought domain, you don%26#039;t have to do this).

If you%26#039;ve configured your domain properties you can now start building your website, wait 24-48 hours after you changed the dns settings to see if they worked, if they did you can start working on straight from your domain.

Sera Dol鑾絘 is the name of my catering company. After much indecision and waffling, trying to find a half-decent name, we settled on this last week (it took twice as long to figure out a name we at least agreed on). This past week, we have been moving very quickly: designing a logo and business documents, letterhead, and envelopes, registering a domain name and finding a host, etc. Just a few minutes ago, my business partner raises doubts about the name, citing the three or four people we have heard so far try to say the name. I can only speak in generalites as there are simply too many variables to refine my answer. In general, a shared host provides less overall bandwith than a dedicated host. So, if you share hosting, find a provider with fewer users. Fewer users means less competitin for the available bandwidth. There are web providers which will provide you with a dedicated hosting service, in which you are guaranteed a certain amount of bandwidth. Your specific needs will determine which is best for you. If you are cojnducting a business and need bandwidth, then a dedicated hosting service is best even though the cost per month will be higher. Shared hosting is cheaper than dedicated hosting, but then you have to compete with all of the other users of the same hosting service, and if they are doing business, may hog the bandwidth, which makes yours suffer. Your ranking may not change with bandwidth in search engines, since ranking comes from several parameters like hits per unit time and keywords, not throughput. You need to do more homework on the throughput issue. If cost is a factor, then by all means, go with the lowest per month, but your bandwidth/throughput may suffer. Only you can decide what works best for the purpose of your site(s) and how you conduct your web business, if indeed you are in business. I opted for a shared host with fewer users for my sites, but then again, I am not doing business, just running personal domains for my own entertainment.
